One life, no rewinds

Earlier builds split the years before August 2040 into chapters with goals. Miss a goal and you could rewind and try again. It made the game easier to balance and much less interesting to play.

Time only goes forward

PROTOCOL GATE 2040.8 now runs from January 1, 2025 to August 2040 without a break. The years still pass in five eras, each opening with its own title card, but nothing is failed and nothing is rewound. A new life starts from the main menu.

Lives can end early

Because there is no rewind, a life can now end before the gate:

  • Overwork. Years without rest wear you down. After three years with no time for family, collapsing is no longer a hospital stay.
  • Market shock. A crash that wipes out a large part of everything you own hits the heart. The first one is a warning. The second, if you are still that exposed, may not be.
  • Scams. Some offers on the board promise too much. The red flags are printed on the card.
  • War zones. Where the fighting is, the hospitals are full.

Every one of these comes with a warning first, and every one can be avoided. The point is not to punish the player. It is to make the choices before the gate feel like they belong to a real life.

Each death is grounded in real medicine and recorded in the Ending Book: 666 ways to die and 144 ways to live, per character. All events in the game are fiction.
